Jeannette Baxter is a Professor of Modern and Contemporary Literature at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. She leads research initiatives such as the Safe & Inclusive Communities theme and directs projects like New Routes, Old Roots (migration literature) and A Day of Welcome (school-based refugee solidarity). Her work bridges academia, community activism, and the arts, focusing on surrealism, fascism, migration, and heritage. She holds editorial roles for journals like Critical Engagements and series like Contemporary Critical Perspectives. Awards include ARU’s Vice-Chancellor’s Impact Prize (2023, 2018). Key projects include Mile Cross 100 (community history), Havens East (Basque refugee heritage), and Come Yew In (Norfolk radical culture).
Education: PhD (U. East Anglia, 2006), MA (U. East Anglia), BA (U. Keele). Research interests include surrealism’s global perspectives, literature and fascism, and historical acoustemology. She supervises PhDs on topics like J.G. Ballard, digital labor, and neurodiversity in children’s literature.
Her articles explore intersections of literature with politics, history, and the visual arts. Notable works include studies on surrealist anti-fascism, J.G. Ballard’s post-war narratives, and the role of humor in atrocity representation. She frequently collaborates with artists, museums, and community groups to produce participatory projects like guerrilla art initiatives and heritage exhibitions.
