Diane Baxter is a Senior Lecturer and Pro Tem Instructor at the University of Oregon, holding affiliations with the Department of Anthropology, the Law School's Conflict and Dispute Resolution (CRES) Program, and the Department of Judaic Studies. She previously served as Director of Internships in Israel and Palestine, and as Head Undergraduate Advisor in Anthropology (1996–2019). Her primary role includes teaching and advising students on Middle East studies and Palestinian refugee issues.
Education: B.A. from UCLA (1976), M.A. in Counseling Psychology from California State University-Northridge (1982), and Ph.D. in Psychological Anthropology from UCLA (1991).
Research focuses on the politics of identity among displaced persons, women, and indigenous peoples in colonial/postcolonial societies, particularly in Israel/Palestine. Notable projects include studying Palestinian refugees in the U.S., directing the Rutherford Middle East Initiative, and creating the MENA (Middle East-North Africa) minor at UO. She co-edited CORI’s Selected Papers in Refugee and Immigrant Studies and authored works like Honor Thy Sister.
Her publications explore themes like Palestinian cultural identity, refugee camp dynamics, and gender agency in conflict zones. Academic contributions include advancing Middle Eastern studies programs and advocating for interdisciplinary approaches to displacement and migration.
