Jeanne Lazarus is a CNRS Research Director and Dean of the University College at Sciences Po, where she contributes to the Center for the Sociology of Organizations (CSO). Her work primarily explores money and banking, focusing on the interactions between households, banks, and public authorities within the framework of banking regulation, collective insurance, and fiscal policies.
- Education: Authorization to supervise research in sociology (2019), Doctorate in Sociology (EHESS, 2009), DEA in sociology (EHESS, 2004), Aggregation in economic and social sciences (2002)
Lazarus’ research delves into public policies on household money, analyzing how these policies evolve alongside transformations in the welfare state. A significant portion of her work examines the nexus between gender studies and money, particularly the link between self-ownership and money ownership. She also investigates financial vulnerability in aging populations and the financialization of domestic economies, with a focus on poverty trajectories and financial inclusion.
Her recent publications, such as How sociology is invented (2024) and The Politics of Money (2022), reflect her interdisciplinary approach to financial systems. Lazarus has also co-authored Financial oikonomization: the financial government and administration of the household (2021), which explores the financial governance of households. She serves as Chief Editor of the journal Sociologie and has held leadership roles in Sciences Po’s governance structures, including President of the Institute's Board (2022-2023).
Lazarus has contributed extensively to understanding financial literacy education as a response to the financialization of daily life, often critiquing its limitations. She has also led interdisciplinary projects on financial inclusion and the social dimensions of credit, emphasizing the moral and relational aspects of financial systems.
