Jeanmarie Koonts serves as Assistant Professor of Nursing in Elon University's School of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing. With 37+ years of maternal-child clinical expertise and 16+ years in academic roles, she teaches foundational to advanced courses including Health Assessment, Reproductive Health (as course chair), and global healthcare relationships while developing Elon's nursing program infrastructure since 2020.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Western Carolina University
- Master of Science in Nursing, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Doctorate of Education candidate in Teaching and Learning, South University (expected 2026)
Research Focus: Professor Koonts pioneers Scholarship of Teaching and Learning through innovative methods like the Puzzle Project and group testing to enhance holistic nursing education. Her work critically examines faith-health integration, global nursing contexts, and student skill retention, directly informing compassionate patient-centered care frameworks. Current initiatives bridge intercultural competence with spiritual care models in clinical practice.

Professional Engagement: Professor Koonts actively shapes nursing education through the Alamance Community College Nursing Advisory Board, National League for Nursing, and American Nurses Association. Community leadership spans Burlington Sister City initiatives, Women's Resource Center advocacy, and Elon Catholic Campus Ministry, reflecting her commitment to holistic community health development.
