Jean Stefancic is a Research Professor specializing in Critical Race Theory and Civil Rights. She has held affiliations with institutions including the University of Colorado Law School, University of Pittsburgh School of Law (as Research Professor & Derrick Bell Scholar), and University of Alabama School of Law (as Clement Research Affiliate). Her work focuses on law reform, social justice, and systemic inequities.
Education: M.A., University of San Francisco; B.A., Maryville College.
Research Interests: Stefancic’s scholarship examines intersections of law, race, and social policy. She co-authored influential works such as Critical White Studies: Looking Behind the Mirror (1995, Myers Award winner) and No Mercy: How Conservative Think Tanks Changed America’s Social Agenda, critiquing right-wing policy shifts. Her book How Lawyers Lose Their Way analyzes professional dissatisfaction in legal careers.
Awards: Recipient of the Derrick Bell Legacy Award (2013), Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship (2001), and Rockefeller Foundation residency (1993). Her work bridges academic rigor with social advocacy.
