Jean Ponce is a Professor and Research Director at Inria, affiliated with École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris. He leads the GraphDeco project team and previously led the VideoWorld project team, a joint effort between Inria, ENS, and CNRS focused on visual recognition models for objects and scenes.
His research focuses on statistical learning to automatically build models for image and video recognition and processing. Ponce specializes in developing methods to automatically analyze and process films regardless of scenes and camera movements, with applications in archiving, modifying, and restoring video content. His work extends from earlier research on pattern recognition in photographs, including reconstructing 3D objects from multiple photos and automatically identifying objects in images.
Ponce returned to France in 2005 after twenty years of research in the United States. His work has been applied by industry leaders in special effects, notably Industrial Light & Magic. In 2010, he received a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant worth 2.5 million euros to advance his video analysis research.
