Ivan Laptev is a Senior Researcher at Inria Paris - Rocquencourt Research Center. He is affiliated with the Willow project team, which collaborates with the Department of Computer Science at École Normale Supérieure. His research focuses on advancing computer vision by simulating the human visual system through algorithms that analyze motion, detect events, and recognize objects in video sequences.
His work involves constructing statistical models to interpret complex scenes by analyzing interactions between objects, aiming to predict behaviors and identify anomalies. Applications include video indexing for archives (e.g., INA, BBC, YouTube), healthcare monitoring for elderly safety, and smart home systems (e.g., tracking misplaced items).
He received the prestigious ERC Starting Grant (€1.5 million) in 2012, enabling his team to move beyond basic object recognition to more nuanced interpretations of dynamic environments.
Laptev earned his PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm at the Computer Vision and Active Perception (CVAP) laboratory. He has been a member of numerous project teams, including Willow, Ex-Situ, and GraphDeco, and contributes to advancing AI through Inria's innovation ecosystem.
