Professeur Jean-Pierre Pelletier is a Full Professor in the Department of Medicine at Université de Montréal's Faculty of Medicine. He is the Co-Director and co-founder of the Université de Montréal Osteoarthritis Research Unit and holds the Université de Montréal Chair in Osteoarthritis. His primary affiliation is with the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).
Education:
- MD (1969-1974), Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal
- Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1966-1969), Collège Sainte-Marie, Montréal
- Postdoctoral studies in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology (1974-1978), Université de Montréal
- Further postdoctoral training in Rheumatology at the University of Miami (1978-1981)
Research Interests:
His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying human and experimental osteoarthritis. Key areas include inflammatory cytokines and their cellular receptors, proteolytic enzymes and inhibitors, intracellular signaling pathways (e.g., MAP kinases), transcription factors, MRI-based structural changes in osteoarthritis, and the development of disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs). He also leads epidemiological and translational studies using longitudinal cohorts of osteoarthritis patients from clinical and observational studies.
Awards and Recognition:
- 2015 - Professeur au mérite de carrière (Université de Montréal)
- 2014 - Master designation by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR)
- 2010 - King Faisal International Prize in Medicine
- 2008 - Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences
- Multiple international recognitions for contributions to rheumatology and osteoarthritis research
Grants and Supervision:
He has led numerous grants including projects on therapeutic potential of the LXA4-ALX/FPR2 axis in osteoarthritis (2022-2028), funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). He has supervised students like Jordi Monfort Faure in proteoglycan research. His work involves collaborations with institutions like the CRCHUM and GREPAQ.
Labs and Teams:
He is affiliated with the Osteoarthritis Research Unit and the Université de Montréal Chair in Osteoarthritis, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in musculoskeletal research.
