Jean-Pierre Hermier is a physicist and Professor at Université Paris-Saclay, where he serves as Deputy Research Director at the Institute for the Sciences of Light (ISL). He also holds the position of Deputy Director at the Group for the Study of Condensed Matter (GEMaC) within the university. His career spans institutions like Université Denis Diderot and Université de Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ), where he advanced research on quantum nanophotonics.
- Education:
- DEA in Quantum Physics, École normale supérieure (1996)
- Ph.D., Kastler Brossel Laboratory (2000)
His research focuses on the quantum properties of light emitted by nano-objects, particularly colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals. Key contributions include the synthesis of thick-shell nanocrystals (CdSe/ZnS) that mitigate blinking and extinction, and coupling them with photonic/plasmonic structures to control emission at variable temperatures. Recent work explores collective emission modes (superradiance) in nanocrystal aggregates and polymeric photonic nanostructures through collaborations with laboratories like Charles Fabry Laboratory (LCF) and Light, Matter and Interfaces Laboratory (LuMIn).
As a scientific leader, Hermier emphasizes long-term, fundamental research supported by recurrent funding and interdisciplinary coordination. He advocates for doctoral co-supervision between laboratories to foster collaboration and address challenges in light sciences, including applications in lighting technology and training international students.
- Scientific Awards:
- Junior Member, University Institute of France (IUF) 2010–2015
He has held educational leadership roles at UVSQ, including overseeing the Physics degree program and serving as Assistant Director of its Science Faculty. His engagement with student support and curriculum development highlights his commitment to bridging research and pedagogy.
