Jean-Pierre Blaser was a distinguished academic and researcher in physics, serving as a Full Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) from 1960 until his retirement in 1990. He held leadership roles including Director of the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research (SIN) and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). His career spanned particle physics, accelerator technology, and space research, contributing significantly to international collaborations like CERN and ESA.
Blaser pursued studies in chemistry, physics, and astronomy at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich, earning his Diploma in natural sciences in 1948 and a Ph.D. in natural sciences (Dr. sc. nat.) from ETH Zurich in 1952. His doctoral work focused on nuclear reactions and accelerator technology.
His research interests were broad and impactful, including solid-state physics, nuclear reactions, and accelerator technology. He pioneered advancements in particle physics using the 440 MeV synchrocyclotron and contributed to the development of atomic clock-based time standards. Blaser also played a key role in high-energy physics through his leadership at CERN and the establishment of the Meson factory at SIN. His later work extended to space science, particularly the Equivalence Principle project (STEP) with ESA/NASA, and medical applications like proton therapy for cancer treatment.
