Jean-Paul Rollo is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Professional Practice at Monash University's Department of Architecture, part of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. He is a registered architect with extensive academic and professional experience, actively engaged in research-based design practice and professional examinations (e.g., Architects Registration Board of Victoria). His work bridges academia and architectural practice, emphasizing sustainable design, material innovation, and adaptive reuse. Rollo collaborates with Monash's Future Building Initiative and Monash Urban Lab on projects like the A$4 million NSW Government housing initiative.
Research interests are reflected through his design projects, including award-winning residential and commercial works such as the Carlton Apartment (understated luxury in urban spaces), Middle Park Studio (innovative spatial efficiency), and Origami House (Highly Commended, Boral Design Award 2008). He explores themes like urban density, materiality, and cultural reinterpretation, exemplified by his Venice Biennale proposal 'Best of Both Worlds' (2010), which reimagined Sydney as an ecumenopolis.
- Awards: Shortlisted for Venice Pavilion competition, Boral Design Awards recognition
- Professional Roles: Examiner for Architects Registration Board of Victoria
