Jean-Michel Ménard serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Science, with a cross-appointment to the Faculty of Engineering's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He leads the ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy laboratory located in the Advanced Research Complex (ARC) on campus, operating some of the world's most advanced optics and photonics infrastructure. His research bridges fundamental science and practical applications through industry collaborations.
Research focuses on terahertz-based technologies for condensed matter research, wireless communication, and molecular imaging. Key areas include time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy of quantum materials, development of photonics tools using nonlinear optical propagation in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers, and high-power laser investigations of light-matter interactions. His lab emphasizes creating compact, cost-effective devices for real-world implementation.
His recent publications demonstrate dominant trends in terahertz detection enhancement (plasmonic antennas, nonlinear upconversion), wireless communication applications (spectral band characterization, water vapor absorption), and advanced material systems (graphene devices, metasurfaces, organic crystals). The work consistently pushes detection sensitivity to quantum limits while developing practical instrumentation.
- Humboldt Fellowship for resolving ultrafast dynamics with terahertz spectroscopy
Ménard teaches core physics courses including Photonics Measurement Techniques (PHY3310), Fundamental Physics Principles (PHY1522), Theoretical Physics (PHY3741), and Electromagnetic Theory (PHY3720). His laboratory collaborates extensively with industry partners to ensure research transitions into impactful applications, particularly in next-generation wireless communications and molecular sensing technologies.
