Jean-Marie GILLIOT is a Lecturer in Computer Science at IMT Atlantique, Brest campus, where he has been teaching and conducting research since 2002 (previously at Télécom Bretagne). He leads the MOTEL research team at Lab-STICC and is actively involved in educational innovation, particularly in the field of Technology-Enhanced Learning.
His primary research interests focus on Educational Technology and Learning Analytics, with specific expertise in Self-Regulated Learning, Open Learner Models, Learning Dashboards, and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). His work explores how digital tools can empower learners, support educational decision-making, and enhance the learning experience through innovative pedagogical approaches.
His recent publications (2023-2025) reveal a strong focus on participatory design of learning analytics dashboards, critical thinking development in the era of generative AI, and self-regulated learning strategies. His research consistently addresses practical challenges in educational technology implementation, with particular attention to sensemaking processes, decision support for educators, and learner empowerment through open and flexible learning environments.
As an academic leader, GILLIOT has supervised PhD students including Dabbebi Inès (2019) on dynamic learning dashboards and Phung Khac, An (2010) on model-driven approaches for adaptable distributed applications. He has led significant research projects such as xCALE, AT41, SEDELA, HUBBLE, and MOOCTAB, focusing on competency development, digital tool appropriation, lifelong learning autonomy, learning trace analysis, and tablet-based MOOC platforms.
His research team MOTEL at Lab-STICC serves as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration in educational technology, working with institutions across France and internationally. GILLIOT is also actively involved in academic communities through leadership roles in conferences like EIAH and QPES, and as a member of ATIEF (Association of Information Technologies for Education and Training).
