Jean-Marc Lavoie is a full Professor at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Medicine - School of Kinesiology and Physical Activity Sciences, where he directs the Metabolic Research Laboratory on the Liver and Exercise (Laboratoire de recherches métaboliques sur le foie et l'exercice). He holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wisconsin.
His research focuses on hepatic lipid/cholesterol regulation, estrogen deficiency impacts on metabolism, and exercise physiology. Key areas include:
- Liver fat accumulation as a determinant of plasma cholesterol
- Molecular mechanisms of exercise in lipid management
- Estrogen withdrawal effects on metabolic pathways
Recent publications (2016-2018) demonstrate consistent themes: metabolic disturbances from high-fat diets, cholesterol/bile acid pathway dynamics in estrogen-deficient models, and molecular marker analysis. This reflects his core focus on exercise interventions in metabolic disorders.
Grants & Projects:
- CRSNG-funded molecular impact of exercise on hepatic fat/cholesterol (2014-2021)
- IRSC-supported critical periods in body weight regulation (2008-2013)
- Long-term cellular studies on liver infiltration (1994-2015)
He has supervised 23 graduate students (16 PhD, 7 Master's) from 1990-2021, covering topics like hepatic steatosis, ovariectomy effects, and cholesterol dysregulation.
