Jean-Marc Chomaz

Jean-Marc Chomaz serves as Director of Research at CNRS and Professor at École Polytechnique, University Paris Saclay. He chairs the Laboratory of Excellence LaSIPS and holds the Arts & Sciences chair (established 2017) jointly with École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs-PSL and Fondation Daniel et Nina Carasso. As associate editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, his institutional roles bridge scientific rigor and artistic innovation.

Chomaz's academic foundation includes an École Normale Supérieure education and a 1985 PhD from University Pierre and Marie Curie. His research uniquely converges fluid dynamics with art-science integration, exploring soap film dynamics, global instability theory, vortex breakdown, and geophysical/stratified fluids while pioneering the Art & Science movement since 1992. Current investigations focus on biomechanics and anthropocene-related phenomena through installations like Planet Laboratory and Lost in Fathoms.

His publication trajectory reveals a strategic shift from foundational fluid mechanics (1990-2000) toward interdisciplinary art-science manifestos (2014-2016), emphasizing anthropocene discourse and sensory science.
