Professor Jean Jonassaint is a faculty member in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at Syracuse University, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He serves as the Graduate Advisor and specializes in Francophone Studies, focusing on Caribbean, Quebec, and African literary narratives. His research emphasizes critical and genetic editions of texts, practical epistemology, and ethics of literary criticism. He has contributed to journals like Présence Africaine and is currently completing a book on Caribbean literature reception and editing works by Frankétienne.
His teaching includes courses on Haitian cultural narratives, Aimé Césaire's theater, and African cinema. He has authored several books, including Typo/Topo/Poéthique: sur Frankétienne (2008) and Le Pouvoir Des Mots, Les Maux Du Pouvoir (1986). His work bridges literary analysis with transnational and postcolonial perspectives, emphasizing textual integrity and cultural context.
Jonassaint’s research explores the intersection of literature and power, particularly in exilic narratives, and he advocates for rigorous scholarly methodologies in Francophone studies. His recent projects aim to recontextualize Caribbean literary heritage through critical editions and comparative analyses.
