Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe is a leading figure in virology and public health, serving as Director of the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Professor at the University of Kinshasa. He is also Director of the Master's program in Ecology of Infectious Diseases, Natural Hazards, and Risk Management (ECOM-ALGER), established in collaboration with the University of Franche-Comté. His seminal work on Ebola hemorrhagic fever began in 1976 during the first outbreak, where he pioneered clinical, epidemiological, and therapeutic research. He developed integrated measures to control Ebola and pioneered convalescent blood transfusion therapy, foundational to modern Ebola serum treatments.
He received the prestigious Christophe Mérieux Prize 2015 from the Institut de France, recognizing his global contributions to combatting Ebola. His collaborations include the Chrono-environment laboratory and the GDRI EHEDE, reflecting his role in international scientific networks. His research emphasizes disease ecology, zoonotic transmission, and emergency response strategies in public health crises.
