Dr. Jean J. Huang is an Associate Professor of Biology at Olin College. She previously conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Washington, Seattle, and holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and a B.A. in Biology from Wellesley College. Her research focuses on microbial diversity, photosynthetic bacteria, and microbial ecology, with an emphasis on applying bacterial metabolic capabilities to address environmental challenges.
Dr. Huang’s educational background includes studies at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, where she participated in the Microbial Diversity Summer Course as a student and later as a teaching assistant. She has received a teaching award from Caltech and was a US EPA STAR Predoctoral Fellow. She collaborates with programs such as the DOE-JGI Undergraduate Genome Annotation Program and the NSF/ASM Biology Scholars Program.
Her research interests span microbial diversity cultivation, community interactions, and the physiological adaptations of photosynthetic bacteria. Her work often intersects with environmental applications, such as biodegradation of polymers and bioenergy production.
Key contributions include studies on saponin-degrading bacteria, biofilm dynamics, and quorum sensing mechanisms. Her recent publications highlight advancements in microbial genomics and environmental biotechnology. Awards reflect her commitment to teaching and research excellence.
Dr. Huang’s collaborations and interdisciplinary approach aim to bridge fundamental microbial research with practical environmental solutions.
