Jean M. Hébrard is a Research Professor in the Department of History at Johns Hopkins University, with joint affiliations at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His research examines cultural history topics including literacy in southern Europe, self-education movements in France, and slavery documentation in Atlantic world archives.
Research focuses on:
- Notarial and sacramental records of slavery in Brazil
- Freedom papers and emancipation processes
- Transatlantic cultural exchanges
- Historical documentation practices
His co-authored book 'Freedom Papers: An Atlantic Odyssey in the Age of Emancipation' received the American Historical Association's Alfred J. Beveridge Award and James A. Rawley Prize. He has served in advisory roles to the French government on education policy.
