Dr. Dexter Gabriel is an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut, jointly appointed with the Africana Studies Institute. He holds a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University and specializes in the histories of slavery, resistance, and freedom in the Black Atlantic, with a focus on abolitionist strategies and post-emancipation societies. His research also engages with slavery in popular culture and media, including film and literature.

Research interests include the transatlantic dimensions of abolitionism, the socio-political aftermath of emancipation, and the intersection of historical scholarship with contemporary cultural narratives. His book Jubilee’s Experiment (2023) examines how British Caribbean emancipation influenced U.S. abolitionism.
Awards include the University of Connecticut Humanities Institute Fellowship (2018-2019) and fellowships from the Massachusetts Historical Society (2018) and American Antiquarian Society (2017). His work bridges academic and public history, addressing themes of memory, representation, and resistance.
