Jean Grassman is an Associate Professor and Doctoral Program Director in Environmental, Occupational, and Geospatial Health Sciences at the CUNY School of Public Health. With over 25 years of experience as an industrial hygienist, she specializes in chemical exposure assessment, biological monitoring, and toxicology in vulnerable populations.
Education: She earned a Ph.D. and M.S. in Environmental Health Sciences from UC Berkeley and a dual B.S. in Anthropology and Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Research Focus: Her work investigates workplace and environmental toxins, including dioxins and fire retardants, and their health impacts. She develops ethical frameworks for biological monitoring and advocates for occupational justice.
Field Work: Collaborates globally on projects such as mercury exposure in artisanal mining communities (Russia, Bolivia) and health risks for migrant women in Southeast Asia. She also researches Agent Orange's legacy in Vietnam.
Leadership: Serves on the ACGIH Biological Exposure Indices Committee and the NYCOSH Board of Directors, promoting worker safety policies.
