Jean Dalibard is a Professor at the Collège de France, holding the Chair of Atoms and Radiation since 2012. He leads the Bose-Einstein Condensates team at the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel (LKB), focusing on ultra-cold quantum matter. Previously, he was a CNRS researcher (until 2012) and a professor at École Polytechnique (1989–2015). His research explores quantum fluids, topological phases, and artificial gauge fields, using cold atoms as quantum simulators. He has held visiting positions at NIST (USA) and the Cavendish Laboratory (UK), and collaborates internationally, including teaching at Peking University and the University of Bonn.
Education: Studied at École Normale Supérieure (1977–1981), earned a PhD under Claude Cohen-Tannoudji (1982–1986). Key contributions include foundational work on laser cooling and theoretical models for quantum gases. Awards include the CNRS Gold Medal (2021) and membership in the French and U.S. National Academies of Sciences.
Research interests span reduced-dimensional quantum fluids, spinor atom gases, and superfluidity, with recent emphasis on solitons in quantum fluids and topological matter. His courses and seminars (e.g., 2024–2025 on Solitons and Matter Waves) reflect this exploration. Advising and grants involve mentoring a team of ~20 researchers, postdocs, and students, advancing experimental and theoretical frontiers in cold atoms. His lab’s work is showcased in exhibitions and popularization efforts, including co-editing the 2024 catalog A la corps!
