Dr. Jean Beer Blumenfeld was an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin from 1973 to 1982. After earning her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley (1973), she transitioned to law, graduating from the University of Texas Law School in 1986. At the time of her death in 1995, she was a litigation attorney at Vincent, Chorey, Taylor & Feil in Atlanta. The Georgia State University Center for Ethics was renamed the Jean Beer Blumenfeld Center for Ethics in her honor in 1998, recognizing her advocacy for ethics, women's rights, minorities, and children.
Her academic focus included ethical theory and philosophy, while her legal career emphasized social justice. Born in London (1945) to Austrian Jewish refugees who fled Nazi persecution, her life reflected resilience and dedication to justice. Her family's escape from Vienna in 1939, documented in her published writings, underscores themes of survival and resistance central to her personal and professional ethos.
