Jayne Gifford is an Associate Professor in Modern History at the University of East Anglia, affiliated with the School of History and Art History and a member of the Global & Transnational History research group. She is actively accepting PhD students and holds significant editorial and professional leadership roles in the historical community.
Her research centers on British imperial history, with a focus on imperial rule at the peripheries of the British Empire. Key interests include knowledge networks, interpersonal dynamics among political and military elites, colonial violence, and the interplay between diplomacy and strategy during the First and Second World Wars. She explores how imperial policy was shaped through personal relationships and regional crises.
Her most recent publications reveal a strong thematic focus on imperial symbolism, diplomatic narratives, and administrative leadership. Articles and books examine royal tours, wartime diaries, and biographical studies of key imperial figures like John Loader Maffey. These works span subfields such as colonial crisis management, Anglo-dominion relations, and symbolic authority in imperial contexts, contributing to broader understandings of British imperial strategy and legacy.
