Professor Jayashri Kulkarni holds dual appointments as Professor of Psychiatry at Monash University and The Alfred Hospital, and directs the Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre (MAPrc). Her leadership expanded MAPrc from 25 to 185 personnel, focusing on translating neuroscience into clinical treatments for severe mental illnesses. She also founded the Australian Consortium for Women’s Mental Health and leads the International Association for Women’s Mental Health. Her research emphasizes women’s mental health, psychoneuroendocrinology (particularly estrogen’s role in psychosis), and trauma’s impact on psychiatric conditions.
Education: MBBS from Monash Medical School (1981), PhD in 'Women and Psychosis' (Monash University, 1997), and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (1989). Teaching roles include directing Monash’s undergraduate medical mental health program and coordinating postgraduate psychiatry training.
Research interests span hormonal treatments for depression, schizophrenia, and trauma-related disorders. Notable studies include NRAMP (antipsychotics in pregnancy), estrogen’s therapeutic effects, and comorbidities in borderline personality disorder. Her work bridges clinical practice and advocacy, with 110+ clinical trials and 363 publications.
Awards include AAHMS Fellowship (2016), multiple editorial recognitions, and innovation awards like the 2010 New Inventors' EVestG diagnostic tool. Collaborations span global networks, addressing autoimmune encephalitis and women’s health initiatives. She leads 72 active research projects and has secured substantial grants/philanthropy.
