Dr. Jay Stachowicz is a Professor in the Department of Evolution and Ecology at the University of California Davis, where he serves as Interim Director of the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute. His research focuses on marine population and community ecology, biodiversity, and biological invasions.
Education:
- B.A. in Biology, Dartmouth College (1993)
- Ph.D., University of North Carolina (1998)
Stachowicz's lab investigates the ecological causes and consequences of biodiversity in marine ecosystems, with a focus on seagrass (Zostera marina) communities. His work spans genetic diversity impacts, microbiome dynamics, climate change responses, and predator-prey interactions, often combining field experiments across Northern California and global locations.
Recent publications highlight trends in seagrass microbiome assembly, disease ecology, and climate change impacts. His research frequently employs genomics and eco-physiological approaches to understand marine foundation species resilience.
Scientific Awards:
- Teaching Prize (2023)
- AAAS Fellow (2021)
Stachowicz leads the Stachowicz Lab, which maintains collaborations with institutions like Bodega Marine Laboratory and engages in global comparative studies such as the Zostera Experimental Network (ZEN). His work emphasizes the intersection of biodiversity, ecosystem function, and conservation.
