Jay S. Magaziner

Dr. Jay S. Magaziner is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he has held a primary appointment since 1983. He also holds secondary appointments in Physical Therapy and Medicine, and serves as Director of the Center for Research on Aging. His research spans three interrelated areas: hip fracture outcomes, long-term care, and aging population methodologies.

• Education: BA from Case Western Reserve University (1970), MA in Adult Development and Aging from University of Chicago (1977), PhD in Adult Development and Aging from University of Chicago (1980), MS Hyg. in Epidemiology from University of Pittsburgh (1982)

Dr. Magaziner's work focuses on improving post-hip fracture recovery, advancing long-term care models, and developing robust methods for studying aging populations. His research has been continuously funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) since 1983, with special emphasis on dementia in nursing homes and hip fracture interventions.

He has received multiple scientific accolades, including two NIA MERIT Awards, the Maryland Gerontological Association's Individual Achievement Award (2006), and the Gerontological Society of America's Excellence in Rehabilitation Award (2012). His publications span top-tier journals in epidemiology, gerontology, and public health.

As a founding leader, Dr. Magaziner established several key initiatives: the Long-Term Care Project, Baltimore Hip Studies program, Aging-Trauma Emergency Care Program, and the university-wide Center for Research on Aging. He serves on editorial boards for major journals and participates in national/international aging research networks.
