Jay McDaniel is a Professor of Religion at Hendrix College. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion and Theology from Claremont Graduate University and a B.A. in English Literature and Philosophy from Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on Process Thought, inter-religious dialogue, and religion’s role in ecology and Chinese cultural contexts. McDaniel has authored books like Living from the Center: Spirituality in the Age of Consumerism (2000) and Gandhi’s Hope (2005), exploring themes of environmental theology and global religious wisdom.
His teaching emphasizes understanding diverse religious perspectives and encouraging students to develop their own philosophical and theological frameworks. He has led educational exchanges to China, including the inaugural Whitehead Summer Academy in 2006, and collaborates with the China Project at Claremont’s Center for Process Studies. McDaniel’s work bridges Eastern and Western theological traditions, advocating for ecologically conscious spirituality and cross-cultural religious collaboration.
Advising and global engagement: McDaniel has mentored students through international fieldwork in China, integrating academic study with experiential learning. His research on religion and ecology highlights urgent environmental ethics, while his interfaith initiatives promote peacebuilding through dialogue. Though no specific grants are noted, his collaborations reflect sustained institutional support for cross-cultural projects.
Labs/teams: Central to his work is the Center for Process Studies (Claremont, CA), which facilitates his China-focused research and educational outreach. His academic network includes scholars engaged in Buddhist-Christian comparative studies and environmental theology.
