Dr. Jay Levy is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, where he has led groundbreaking HIV/AIDS research for over four decades. His laboratory focuses on understanding virus-immune system interactions in microbial pathogenesis, with particular emphasis on HIV infection and the development of novel antiviral therapies and an effective AIDS vaccine.
Levy earned his BA in Biology from Wesleyan University (1960), studied Regeneration at Universite de Paris (1961), and received his MD in Medicine and Virology from Columbia University (1965). His educational background established the foundation for his pioneering work in viral pathogenesis.
Dr. Levy's research centers on anti-HIV innate immune responses, particularly the role of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDC) as major producers of type 1 interferons. His laboratory made the seminal discovery of the CD8+ cell noncytotoxic antiviral response (CNAR), which suppresses HIV replication without killing infected cells. This response is mediated by an unidentified CD8+ cell antiviral factor (CAF) that blocks HIV transcription. Current research focuses on identifying CAF through RNA Seq procedures, determining optimal AIDS vaccine strategies, and developing genetically modified stem cell approaches toward an HIV cure.
Analysis of Dr. Levy's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on HIV cure strategies through stem cell engineering, particularly using CRISPR-modified induced pluripotent stem cells with CCR5Δ32 mutations. His work bridges fundamental virology with translational applications, emphasizing the importance of both innate and adaptive immune responses in controlling HIV infection. Current research focuses on Characterization of a New Anti-HIV Immune Protein (R21AI129685) and HIV Cure with CCR5(-) Human iPS Hematopoietic Stem Cells (R01AI102825), representing the translational application of his fundamental discoveries.
