Jay L Banner is the F. M. Bullard Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Director of the Environmental Science Institute at The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on climate and hydrologic processes, particularly how these are recorded in geological archives like speleothems and how human activities impact water resources. He leads initiatives such as Planet Texas 2050 and CRESSLE, addressing climate resilience and community engagement. Banner has held roles including Director of the Environmental Science Institute since 2000 and has authored over 200 publications. He holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and advanced degrees from SUNY Stony Brook, with postdoctoral work at Caltech and LSU.
Education: B.A. in Geology (University of Pennsylvania), M.S. and Ph.D. in Earth Science (SUNY Stony Brook), Postdoctoral Fellow (Caltech and LSU).
Research interests span paleoclimatology, urban hydrology, environmental justice, and isotope geochemistry. Notable projects include studies on speleothem records of climate change and urbanization impacts on water systems. He advises a diverse group of graduate students and postdocs, collaborating with institutions globally.
Awards include the 2024 Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching, multiple teaching excellence awards, and fellowships. His community engagement includes the Hot Science – Cool Talks series and outreach programs linking STEM with K-12 education.
