Dr. Jay Kapellusch is a Professor and Head of School in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences & Technology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), where he also serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Health Professions & Sciences. His work spans occupational therapy, biomechanics, and industrial engineering, focusing on proactive job design algorithms to prevent musculoskeletal disorders.
His research bridges ergonomics with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma, integrating statistical quality control and methods engineering to create industry-aligned job design systems. Additionally, he develops assistive devices for older and disabled populations, aiming to enhance societal participation. With the UWM Center for Ergonomics, he collaborates on risk management software, training packages, and fee-for-service consulting for manufacturing and healthcare sectors.
The 15 most recent publications highlight interdisciplinary trends in occupational biomechanics, musculoskeletal epidemiology, and machine learning applications for exposure assessment. Key subfields include carpal tunnel syndrome, low back pain, handgrip strength norms, and psychosocial risk factors, with NHANES and prospective cohort studies providing empirical grounding.
His NIOSH-funded grant explored cardiovascular and metabolic risks in truck drivers, addressing career longevity and injury prevention. As mentor and leader, he extends his lab's impact through ergonomic consulting and industry partnerships, emphasizing practical solutions for workplace health and productivity.
