Jay Dolmage is a Professor and Chair of the Department of English at the University of Waterloo. His work bridges rhetoric, writing studies, disability studies, and critical pedagogy, with a focus on disability rights in academic environments. He has authored three significant books: Disability Rhetoric (2014), Academic Ableism: Disability and Higher Education (2017), and Disabled Upon Arrival: Eugenics, Immigration, and the Construction of Race and Disability (2018).
In research, Dolmage examines historical eugenics practices in academic institutions, the rhetoric of immigration and disability, and accessible pedagogical frameworks. His recent collaborative project, funded through a class-action lawsuit settlement, empowers survivors of Ontario institutionalization to author books documenting their experiences. He also develops classroom accessibility resources to support inclusive education.
Scientific awards include multiple SSHRC grants, the Disability History Association Best Article Award (2013), and two Theresa J. Enos Awards for excellence in rhetoric scholarship (2011, 2006). He founded the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies, advancing disability discourse in academia.
