Jay D. Schieber is a Professor of Chemical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, and Physics at Illinois Institute of Technology, and Director of the Center for Molecular Study of Soft Condensed Matter. He holds academic affiliations with the Armour College of Engineering, Lewis College of Science and Letters, and College of Computing. His research focuses on kinetic theory of macromolecules, polymer rheology, and thermal conductivity in polymeric materials. He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1982) and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1989), followed by an NSF-NATO postdoctoral fellowship in Physics at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland (1990).
Professor Schieber’s research group employs molecular dynamics simulations and finite element methods to model polymeric liquid behavior during processing. Collaborating with Professor David Venerus, he pioneered an optical technique (Forced Rayleigh Light Scattering) to measure anisotropic thermal conductivity in deformed polymer melts. His work integrates computational fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and experimental physics to advance soft condensed matter science.
