Jay A. Pearson serves as McLain Foundation Associate Professor of Public Policy and Associate Professor at Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy, with additional appointments as Associate Research Professor of Global Health and Faculty Research Scholar at DuPRI's Population Research Center. His interdisciplinary work bridges public policy, global health, and social justice.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2006), M.P.H. from the University of North Carolina (1996), and B.S. from North Carolina Central University (1991). Early career experiences as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras and health educator with migrant communities inform his research trajectory.
Pearson's research examines how structurally rooted social inequality influences health disadvantage, with focus areas including:
- Racial assignment and health outcomes
- Immigrant health disparities
- Allostatic load as a biomarker of inequality
- Policy interventions for health equity
- Ethical frameworks for health data collection

Pearson leads significant research initiatives including the 2025-2026 'Community Partnered Engagement to Reduce Violence Among Youth of Color' and previously directed Duke's Population Research Institute (2010-2015).
