Javier Patiño

Dr. Javier Patiño is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA, tenured since July 2024. He specializes in Early Modern Iberian and Italian cultures, with a focus on the intersection of rhetoric, science, and literature. His work bridges literary analysis with the history of science, particularly examining how concepts like wonder, paradox, and natural philosophy shaped early modern thought.

Education: PhD from Princeton University. He has held prestigious fellowships, including an ACLS Fellowship (2020–2021) and a Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fellowship at I Tatti (2024–2025). His research explores topics such as rhetorical conceits, historical narratives of migration and war, and the intellectual networks of Jesuit Rome.

His recent book The Age of Subtlety (2024) analyzes how Early Modern writers used metaphorical language to engage with scientific and cultural questions. Current projects include Ecologies of Decay, which examines spontaneous generation theories. His work often highlights interdisciplinary approaches, blending literary criticism with historical and scientific analysis.
