Javier Ortega

Professor Javier Ortega holds the position of Professor of Economics at Kingston University London, where he has served as Associate Dean for Research (2020–2024) and Interim Dean (2021–2023). He is also a Visiting Senior Fellow at the European Institute, London School of Economics. His career includes roles as Head of the Economics Department at City, University of London (2013–2017) and Associate Professor at Toulouse School of Economics (1998–2008).

Education includes a PhD in Economics from DELTA (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, 1996), MSc Economics from Université Catholique de Louvain (1992), and BSc Economics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1991).

Research focuses on Labour Economics and Political Economy, with current projects exploring the use of English in India, stability of political party systems, and links between nation-building and colonial history. Teaching specialties include Micro/Macro Economics, Public Economics, and the Economics of Identity.

Leadership experience includes academic management roles, and his work bridges theoretical economics with applied policy analysis in cultural and institutional contexts.
