Dr. Javier Izquierdo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Hofstra University, where he leads the Izquierdo Lab focused on microbial ecology and sustainable bioenergy. His research integrates microbiological, genomic, and molecular approaches to study plant-microbe interactions and lignocellulose degradation for biofuel production.
His educational background includes a B.S. in Biology from Case Western Reserve University and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He completed postdoctoral research at Dartmouth College and North Carolina State University under the DOE-funded BioEnergy Science Center, and also worked in industry as Bioenergy Program Manager at RTI International.
Dr. Izquierdo's research focuses on two primary areas: (1) the role of root microbiomes in promoting plant health in species like American beachgrass and grapevine, and (2) the microbial ecology of lignocellulose utilization for sustainable biofuel production. He uses both traditional microbiology and advanced -omics techniques to explore microbial diversity and function in soil environments.
The recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on microbial genomics, plant-microbe interactions, and bioenergy applications. His work spans from comparative genomics of plant growth-promoting bacteria to pan-genomic analysis of thermophilic microbes involved in biomass degradation, indicating a consistent research trajectory in environmental microbiology and sustainable biotechnology.

Dr. Izquierdo actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students in research, teaching courses in microbiology, molecular biology, and genomics. He co-authored "Laboratory Exercises in Microbiology" and emphasizes innovative science communication through music and pop culture references. His lab receives external funding from the National Science Foundation, supporting student involvement in cutting-edge research.
The Izquierdo Lab at Hofstra University investigates microbial metabolic diversity with applications in agriculture and renewable energy. The lab uses model systems like Ammophila breviligulata and Vitis vinifera to study soil microbial communities and their impact on plant health, while also exploring cooperative microbial degradation of lignocellulose for biofuel production.
