Javier A. Izquierdo is an Associate Professor of Biology at Hofstra University, where he leads the Izquierdo Lab. His research focuses on microbial metabolic diversity, particularly in plant-microbe interactions and sustainable biofuel production from agricultural waste. He holds a B.Sc. in Biology from Case Western Reserve University and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Dr. Izquierdo’s work integrates microbiological, molecular, and genomic techniques to explore how plant microbiomes contribute to host health and to discover novel microbial processes for biofuel production. His NSF-funded research examines the role of root microbiomes in beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) health. Prior to Hofstra, he conducted postdoctoral research at Dartmouth College and RTI International, focusing on thermophilic microbes and bioenergy.
He teaches courses in microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, and co-authored "Laboratory Exercises in Microbiology." His lab investigates microbial communities in coastal dunes and grape vines (Vitis vinifera), aiming to uncover efficient lignocellulose degradation pathways for industrial applications.
Recent publications highlight genomic analyses of plant-growth promoting bacteria and comparative studies of thermophilic microbes involved in biomass utilization. His research bridges environmental microbiology with applied biotechnology, emphasizing sustainable resource utilization.
