Javier Cikota is an Assistant Professor of History at Bowdoin College, affiliated with the Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies program. He holds a PhD in Latin American History from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BA from the University of Texas at Austin. His research examines state legitimacy in frontier spaces, focusing on legal literacy, gender dynamics, and nationalism in Patagonia. Currently, he is working on a book project titled Frontier Justice, analyzing how settlers and indigenous peoples interacted with Argentine state institutions.
Teaching interests include Latin American history from the 15th century to the present, with courses on revolutions in Latin America and race and belonging in the region. He emphasizes legal documents as primary sources to understand everyday lives and societal structures.
