Jason Whittle is Professor and Dean of Research for UniSA STEM at the University of South Australia. His research develops plasma polymer coatings for biomedical applications, particularly wound dressings, antimicrobial surfaces, and stem cell interfaces.
Research foci:
- Functionalized wound dressings enhancing healing kinetics
- Iodophoric polymers for pathogen inhibition
- Stem cell-surface interactions
- Nanoscale antimicrobial coatings
- Brain cell adhesion platforms
Recent innovations include diaminopropane plasma polymers improving neuronal culture adherence for electrophysiology, and iodine-complexed poly(vinyl amide) coatings demonstrating broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Translational work supported by Wound Management Innovation Cooperative Research Centre shows accelerated re-epithelialization in animal models using plasma-functionalized dressings.
Collaborates across Future Industries Institute and SA Health and Medical Research Institute. Contributes to Cooperative Research Centre for Cell Therapy Manufacturing initiatives on advanced biomaterial interfaces.
