Dr. Jason Whitlark is a Professor of New Testament at Baylor University, affiliated with both the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core (BIC) and the Honors College. He teaches World Cultures I and Biblical Heritage and Contemporary Ethical Issues for the BIC, as well as Hebrews and the Catholic Epistles for the Religion Department. He has participated in study abroad programs in Italy, Greece, and Turkey.
Dr. Whitlark earned his undergraduate degree in molecular biology from Auburn University, studied divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and received his Ph.D. in New Testament from Baylor's Religion Department. His academic journey reflects an interdisciplinary approach that bridges scientific and theological perspectives.
His research focuses primarily on the Letter to the Hebrews within its ancient Mediterranean context, with particular attention to how Hebrews responds to Roman imperial culture. He explores New Testament theology and ethics, salvation in the New Testament, and the ancient Mediterranean context of biblical texts. His approach integrates rhetorical criticism, historical analysis, and theological reflection.
His recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate continued scholarly engagement with Hebrews, particularly examining its reception history, rhetorical strategies, and political implications within the Roman imperial context. His work spans diverse topics including humor in Hebrews, eucharistic interpretations, citizenship metaphors, and the letter's response to Roman imperial ideology.
Dr. Whitlark has co-authored numerous publications with Michael Wade Martin and other scholars, reflecting his collaborative approach to research. His work appears in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Biblical Literature, New Testament Studies, and the Journal of Theological Studies.
He has taught at Baylor since 2007 and continues to be an active contributor to biblical scholarship through his publications, conference presentations, and teaching responsibilities across multiple university programs.
