معرفی
Professor Jason Smith is a Professor and Head of Discipline in Chemistry at the University of Tasmania's School of Natural Sciences. His research focuses on organic chemistry, drug discovery, and sustainable materials from renewable resources. He holds a BSc (Hons) and PhD from Flinders University, with postdoctoral training at Texas A&M and Australian National University. Notable awards include the RACI Athel Beckwith Lectureship (2005) and Tasmanian STEM Innovation Award (2017).
Research interests include organic molecule synthesis for drug development, plant hormone biosynthesis, and natural product isolation using innovative methods like pressurized hot water extraction. His work bridges chemistry with applications in medicine, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Key projects include bio-derived polymer synthesis and drug candidate development from cannabis derivatives.
- Teaching: Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Reaction Mechanisms
- Grants: Over $24M in funded projects, including bio-based polymers and marine bioproducts
- Supervision: 20+ doctoral students, focusing on natural products, drug discovery, and sustainable chemistry
His labs collaborate on drug development, polymer innovation, and analysis of Tasmanian flora. Recent studies highlight leatherwood honey chemistry and bioactive compounds from native plants.
