Jason Scorse is a Professor in the Environmental Policy and Management department at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. He has served as Chair of the Environmental Policy and Management program since 2009 and as Director of the Center for the Blue Economy since 2011. Scorse teaches courses in environmental and natural resource economics, ocean and coastal economics, and behavioral economics, emphasizing the practical application of economic theory to environmental challenges.

His research focuses on implementing environmental policy, integrating insights from psychology, sociology, communication, and political economy. Key areas include transitioning to renewable energy, promoting plant-based lifestyles for sustainability, and addressing economic inertia in policy systems. His work bridges academic theory with real-world applications through partnerships like the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Research Activities Panel and UC-Santa Cruz’s MARINE program.
Scorse’s publications span ocean economics, labor standards, anti-sweatshop activism, and marine ecosystem valuation. He has served on advisory panels and consulted for organizations including the Sierra Club and Oceana. His book What Environmentalists Need to Know about Economics (2010) remains a foundational text in the field.
