Jason R. Baron is a Professor of the Practice at the University of Maryland's College of Information Studies (iSchool), focusing on the intersection of law, archives, and information retrieval. He joined the iSchool in 2020 and co-founded the Center for Archival Futures. His research emphasizes practical AI applications for public access to government records, particularly via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Education: B.A. magna cum laude from Wesleyan University; J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
Research interests include electronic discovery (eDiscovery), legal technology, and digital archiving. He previously served as Director of Litigation at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), litigated landmark White House records cases at the U.S. Department of Justice, and was Of Counsel at Faegre Drinker LLP.
Key achievements: Recipient of the Emmett Leahy Award and the Justice Tom C. Clark Award. Authored works include Perspectives on Predictive Coding (2016) and co-edited The Sedona Conference commentaries on eDiscovery. He co-founded the TREC Legal Track and DESI Workshop series.
Teaching: Taught the first U.S. graduate-level eDiscovery seminar at the iSchool. Active in professional organizations like The Sedona Conference and ARMA International.
