Dr. Jason L. Newton is a Teaching Professor in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). He joined the university in 2020 as the inaugural post-doctoral fellow in the Capitalism Studies program and later transitioned to his current role. His academic focus encompasses capitalism studies, labor history, and environmental history, with a specialization in the industrialization of the Northern Forest and its socio-ecological impacts. He directs the History Learning Community for incoming freshmen.
Dr. Newton’s research culminated in his award-winning book *Cutover Capitalism: The Industrialization of the Northern Forest (2025)*, which analyzes the exploitation of labor and natural resources in 19th- and early 20th-century logging industries. His work bridges labor, environmental, and capitalist historiographies, emphasizing how industrialization leveraged human and environmental resources as 'natural forces.'
His teaching includes courses on U.S. labor history, capitalism studies, and environmental history. He has authored numerous articles and syllabi exploring themes like worker agency, environmental exploitation, and the cultural symbolism of laborers. Dr. Newton is an affiliate of the Capitalism Studies program and serves on the UNC Charlotte AAUP board.
Awards include the 2025 George Perkins Marsh Prize finalist recognition for his book. His research and pedagogy emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to understanding historical processes and their contemporary legacies.
