Jason Neva is an Associate Professor at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Medicine - School of Kinesiology and Physical Activity Sciences, where he conducts research on the neural mechanisms underlying motor learning and control. His work spans multiple research centers including the Research Center of the University Institute of Geriatrics of Montreal (CRIUGM), Quebec Bioimaging Network (RBIQ), and the Interdisciplinary Center for Brain and Learning Research (CIRCA).
Dr. Neva's research focuses on central nervous system mechanisms supporting motor learning and control, the impact of interventions like acute exercise and transcranial magnetic stimulation on neuroplasticity, and developing more effective interventions for improving motor functions after stroke and neurodegenerative conditions. His work combines exercise physiology with advanced neuroimaging techniques to understand how physical activity influences brain function and motor recovery.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on how acute exercise modulates corticospinal excitability, neuroplasticity mechanisms, and motor learning across various populations including older adults, stroke survivors, and individuals with Parkinson's disease. His research increasingly incorporates advanced neuromodulation techniques like theta burst stimulation to enhance motor recovery.
Dr. Neva has secured significant research funding from major Canadian funding agencies including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Quebec Health Research Fund (FRQS), with projects running through 2027 that investigate neural mechanisms supporting motor learning enhancement through acute exercise.
His work has been published in leading neuroscience and rehabilitation journals including Experimental Brain Research, Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience, Movement Disorders, and Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, demonstrating substantial impact in the fields of motor control, neuroplasticity, and rehabilitation science.
