Jason McLellan is a Professor of Molecular Biosciences and the Robert A. Welch Chair in Chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on viral and bacterial proteins, particularly in the development of vaccines and treatments for pathogens such as coronaviruses and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). He leads the McLellan Lab which employs structural biology techniques to design vaccine immunogens.
Education includes:
- Postdoctoral research at NIH Vaccine Research Center
- Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
- B.S. in Chemistry from Wayne State University
Research interests span structural biology, virology, and vaccine development, with particular focus on respiratory viruses and coronaviruses. His work combines cryo-EM and protein engineering to develop stabilized vaccine antigens.
Publication trends show consistent focus on structural characterization of viral proteins, antibody neutralization mechanisms, and rational vaccine design, with recent work expanding into hemorrhagic fever viruses and broad coronavirus protection strategies.
Scientific Awards:
- 2024 BioMedSA Innovation Award
- 2023 National Academy of Sciences Award
- 2020 Golden Goose Award
- 2019 Young Investigator in Virology Prize
The McLellan Lab collaborates extensively with academic, government, and industry partners to translate structural insights into clinical applications.
