Jason Guynes is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Alabama. He holds an MFA in Painting from Tulane University and a BA from Belhaven College. With over 30 years in academia, he has held leadership roles at three institutions, including founding the UWA Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition. His artistic practice focuses on murals, oil painting, and socially engaged projects, including a CDC-funded exhibition at the Smithsonian-affiliated CDC Museum in 2023. He has completed major public commissions across the U.S. and organizes international study programs in Spain and Italy.

His research interests span public art, contemporary painting, and art education. Awards include Mobile’s 2014 Artist of the Year and the 2017 Best of Show Award from St. Tammany Art Association.
Guynes oversees major facility upgrades, such as the new graduate studio at UA and renovations in Woods Hall. His work often explores historical and architectural themes influenced by Mediterranean civilizations.
