Dr. Jason G. Gillmore is a Professor of Chemistry at Hope College, where he joined the faculty in 2004. He earned tenure in 2010 and was promoted to full professor in 2016. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Rochester (2003), an M.S. from Virginia Tech (1998), and a B.S. from Virginia Tech (1996). He has held visiting professorships at Michigan State University (2018–2019) and Arizona State University (2011–2012).
His research focuses on:
- Organic photochemistry and electrochemistry
- Design of photochromic materials and molecular switches
- Computational modeling of redox properties
- Development of photomechanical polymers and energy storage systems
- Pedagogical innovations in undergraduate research (CUREs)
Recent publications emphasize electrochromic materials, organic flow batteries, synthetic methodology, and STEM education reform. His work consistently integrates computational and experimental approaches to solve problems in energy materials and photoresponsive systems.
Awards & Honors:
- Schaap Research Fellowship (2013–2028)
- Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (2014–2019)
- NSF CAREER Award (2010–2016)
- Multiple Hope College teaching/mentoring awards (2015–2022)
He directs the Gillmore Research Group, mentoring 3–6 undergraduate researchers annually. His lab explores organic photochemistry, dye synthesis, and computational electrochemistry, with collaborations spanning engineering and biology departments. External funding exceeds $1.8M from NSF, ACS-PRF, Dreyfus Foundation, and Beckman Scholars Program.
