Jason Coyle is a Professor in the Film and Video Department at Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). He holds an MA from New York University and an MFA from Temple University. His work focuses on observational documentary practices exploring human-animal relationships, systems of classification, and the interplay between natural and artificial environments.
Coyle’s research has been supported by grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and Jerome Foundation. Notable works include the collaborative feature Deer of North America (2017), which interrogates blurred boundaries between domesticated and wild spaces, and Unless the Names are Known to You (2020), a documentary examining an animal forensics laboratory. His essay Crime Scenes in Suburbia analyzes urban spatial dynamics through cinematic lenses.
Awards include the Flaherty Film Seminar Fellowship and membership in the inaugural Jerome Hill Artist Fellows collective with filmmaker Laska Jimsen. His films prioritize audience participation, using long takes and subtle variations to create immersive, contemplative viewing experiences.
